In the 1950s Stoke began using the shield from the Stoke-on-Trent coat-of-arms which was used infrequently until 1977. A new and simpler club crest was introduced a Stafford knot and pottery kiln represented local tradition while red and white stripes were also added.

To announce the launch, the club published a picture of the ceramics industry, the cradle of Stoke. Stoke-on-Trent is the ceramics capital of the world.

The club crest, which was based on the coat of arms of the city of Stoke, appeared on the team's shirts for the first time in 1953. The various elements are taken from the individual arms of the towns that were brought together in 1910 to form the county borough of Stoke-on-Trent: Burslem, Longton, Tunstall, Fenton and Stoke.

In 1992 Stoke City unusually reverted back to the city’s arms, this time to the full version, including an Egyptian potter at his wheel in the crest, representing the pottery industry.

On the crest of the arms is an ancient Egyptian potter working away at his wheel. Stoke is known as one of the worlds leading centres of pottery, hence the area is known as the Potteries. It is, as you will have already gathered, the reason behind the club’s nickname.

Stoke City Football Club has its origins in Stoke Ramblers, a team formed by former pupils of the Charterhouse School whilst they were apprentices at the North Staffordshire Railway.
