It’s a Memorial Day weekend for the box office record books. Movie theaters across the country were jamming as “Lilo & Stitch” and Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” fueled the largest Memorial Day holiday in history — and established several other benchmarks in the process.

Meanwhile, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is hoping to establish a new opening weekend record for the 29-year-old franchise — a distinction that belongs to 2018’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” with $61 million. Overseas, “The Final Reckoning” should bring in $125 million to $130 million for a worldwide start above $200 million.

The two films delivered the biggest Memorial Day picnic in history at the box office, while 'Lilo' supplanted Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun: Maverick' as the holiday's top opener of all time, among numerous other feats.
