Chief Justice John Roberts stressed the importance of judicial independence during public remarks Wednesday, noting that the judiciary’s role as a co-equal branch of government is central to the nation’s political system.

The head of a legal watchdog organization who clerked for one of President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court appointments has accused Chief Justice John Roberts of malfeasance in allowing lower courts to commit “judicial sabotage” against President Donald Trump’s second-term agenda.

Speaking in Buffalo on Wednesday, the Supreme Court justice said judges sometimes have to "check the excesses" of the president and Congress.
