Juneteenth celebrations have been scaled back this year due to funding shortfalls as companies and municipalities across the country reconsider their support for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
Thursday is Juneteenth but celebrations have already begun. The Atlanta History Center celebrated with an event focused on Black craftmanship over the weekend and the 13th annual Juneteenth Atlanta Parade and Festival took place in Midtown Atlanta.
Juneteenth is an important day in Black history as well as American history. Though Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, it wasn't until June 19, 1865 that the last enslaved people in the United States were freed. Juneteenth is a reason to celebrate, and across the Island, there are plenty of ways to join in.

Jacksonville, Fla. — The Mayor’s African American Advisory Board will host a Juneteenth Celebration on Tuesday, June 17. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will take place at the Main Library’s Hicks Auditorium, located at 303 North Laura Street in downtown Jacksonville.
Traders have a few other breaks coming on the summer schedule, starting with Independence Day. Stock trading will end early, at 1 p.m. ET, on Thursday, July 3, while bond trading will end at 2 p.m. Both markets will remain remain shut on July 4th, a Friday.
With Juneteenth coming up next week, state and city services, like garbage collection, will be suspended for the federal holiday.
