GM R. Praggnanandhaa held his fort against reining World Champion and compatriot D. Gukesh for a come-from-behind win in the tiebreaks to claim the Tata Steel Masters 2025 in Wijk aan Zee on Sunday.

In a thrilling finale at the Tata Steel Masters chess tournament, Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa staged an impressive comeback to defeat reigning world champion D. Gukesh 2-1 in a tense tiebreaker on Sunday.

R Pragnanandhaa has stunned world champion D Gukesh to win the Tata Steel Masters 2025 chess title. It was an all-India final played in Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands on Sunday (February 2) and Pragnanandhaa triumphed in the tiebreaker.

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa beat Alexey Sarana of Serbia to register his third straight victory and take his tally to a commendable 8.5 points. He now shares the top spot with compatriot D Gukesh in the end of the 12th and penultimate round of Tata Steel Masters in Netherlands on Saturday.

Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa came from behind to beat world champion D. Gukesh 2-1 in the tiebreaker to win the Tata Steel Masters chess tournament here on Sunday. There was huge drama typical of two young players looking to win each and every tiebreak game after they ended the 13th and final round of the tournament tied for the top spot with 8.

Following the win, Praggnanandhaa cheekily thanked compatriot Arjun Erigaisi, who earlier in the final round handed Gukesh a shocking loss.

Leaders Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh have 8.5 points each at the end of the 12th and penultimate round of Tata Steel Masters in the Netherlands on Saturday.
