Rain helped firefighters continue to increase containment on a wildfire that burned thousands of acres and forced evacuation orders and warnings north of the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County. The blaze,

The Border 2 Fire was 40% contained Monday, up from 10%, with the National Weather Service's forecast of rain prompting optimism from Cal Fire that it "should mitigate fire activity, helping fire crews to continue strengthening containment lines."

Border 2 Fire initially started 1:58 p.m. Jan. 23 in San Diego County. After being active for three days, it has burned 6,625 acres. A fire crew of 2,413 effectively contained 10% of the fire by Sunday morning. The blaze's cause remains under investigation.

The San Diego County Office of Education said Friday that Eastlake High, Eastlake Middle, Olympian High, East Hills Academy, High Tech High Chula Vista and Arroyo Vista Charter School would also be closed. Southwestern College said faculty, students and staff would move to remote work Friday due to the fire.

Firefighters worked overnight to corral the Border 2 Fire, which spread over some 10 square miles of remote terrain a few miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border and was still only 10% contained Sunday morning.
