Efforts to rescue nine workers trapped inside a flooded coal mine in Assam's Dima Hasao district intensified on Tuesday, with personnel from the navy, army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) working in coordination.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that a person has been arrested after nine workers were trapped inside a coal mine in Dima Hasao district, which "appears to be illegal".

‘Rat-hole’ mining It is a method of extracting coal from horizontal seams in Meghalaya and other northeastern States. Narrow pits are dug into the ground, large enough for one person to fit in and extract the coal, just like rats dig a hole.

Guwahati: Army personnel have been engaged to rescue the nine labourers trapped inside a coal mine in Assam's Dima Hasao district, officials said on Tuesday. A relief task force with specialists such as divers and sappers, equipped with essential tools, reached the site in Umrangso to rescue the miners, a defence spokesperson said.

The water level has increased in the coal mine where at least nine labourers got trapped in Assam's Umrangso locality and deep divers of the Indian Navy were called to assist the rescue operation, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday.

An official said that along with the Navy divers and other rescue teams, two water pumping machines have also been deployed to flush out the water.
